The Essence of Buddhism provides an overview of Buddhist thought and philosophy. Focusing on practical application, the course covers topics like the nature of mind, meditation, and how to deal with disturbing emotions.

The Indian saint Shantideva wrote “whatever joy there is in this world, all comes from desiring others to be happy”. This summarizes the Buddhist idea that developing extraordinary levels of compassion is an essential component of the spiritual path to mental well-being and lasting peace because it lessens self-centeredness which is the source of all our problems. In this four-week Essence of Buddhism unit, Venerable Drolma discusses why this is the case, and teaches practical methods that lead to increased appreciation of, and concern for, others.

You do not need to have attended any previous units of Essence of Buddhism - each module is a standalone course. Join in at any time - all welcome!

Tuesday evenings 6pm – 7:30pm, 7th May – 28h May at Millwell Road Community Centre. $10 facility fee per session. Bookings not necessary!  The next 4-week unit Essence of Buddhism: The Wisdom of Understanding will run June 4, 11, and 25.

School and university require you to spend years studying math, science, geography, literature, and so on. But how much time do you spend learning about being human? When did you learn about your mind? How did you figure out how to deal with difficult thoughts and feelings? How much time do you spend developing knowledge about you—an individual who has wants, needs, interests, and dreams.

Did you learn at school or at home how skills to deal with the pressures of life—difficult friends, stressful work environment, annoying customers and demanding bosses?

Mindfulness is probably one of the best skills you can ever learn. It helps you to be confident, productive, and switched-on regardless of the situation you’re in. Whether it’s an interview, a social event, a break-up, or a breakdown, mindfulness can help you figure what’s really going on for you and the best ways to think and act.

In this course, you’ll learn how to watch your mind, to be comfortable with fear, to not give in to anxiety, to understand doubt is good, to recognise we all fall down—it’s the getting back up bit we need to learn and practice!

    Sunday 9th June 10am - 5:00pm. Course fee $75/$65 Conc.

Course fee includes tea/coffee and complimentary parking.

Thoughts lie at the root of how we speak and act, and how we act defines the quality of our lives. But rather than being a slave to our habitual thoughts and behaviours, we have the ability to train and transform our minds. By doing so, we can free ourselves from our usual patterns and explore new ways of living - with humility, patience, contentment, and delight.

This workshop provides straightforward tools for developing happiness and meaning in everyday life by focusing on how we think and how we act. It also explores the deeper value to ourselves of kindness, honesty, generosity and positive speech. It is suitable for people of all ages, faiths, and cultural backgrounds; and uses everyday language for people from any or no spiritual tradition.

This is a paired workshop with Tools for Happiness: How We Relate and Find Meaning in August. You don't have to do both - you will get a lot out of the individual workshop - but loads out of doing them together!

Shamatha means 'to abide in peace'. It is the practice of tranquility or stabilising meditation - a method to allow the mind to be clear, calm, and happy.

Normally our mind is constantly agitated.
Shamatha involves training the mind to be comfortable with itself without always getting involved with the thoughts and emotions that typically keep it disturbed. It relies on developing mindfulness, self-acceptance, and a sense of mental well-being.

Shamatha  is considered to be an essential component of Buddhist practice., because a peaceful, stable mind is necessary for maintaining single-pointed concentration and for experiencing the arising of true insight.

This retreat begins with a weekend of teachings and practical instruction, and continues with five days of intensive practice supported and led by T.Y. Limited weekend-only places are available.

    Friday 21st June

Whether it is our parents, partners, relatives or friends, we all have someone who has hurt us in some way. Many of us carry the anger and pain from those events, or the regret from our own actions, for much of our lives. But holding onto those emotions just causes us, and no one else, to suffer. So how do we learn to let go of the past and begin to heal ourselves so that we can experience real freedom and peace?

This weekend workshop teaches effective, practical methods of unburdening ourselves of anger, regret and resentment. Led by renowned psychotherapist, Renate Ogilvie, it investigates the wisdom of forgiveness and compassion. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to discover how to let go of the past and reclaim your life! All welcome!

Karma describes the simple fact that all of our actions have inevitable consequences. It is not a mysterious force, or punishment handed out by someone else - merely the outcome of our own choices and actions. Understanding how karma works gives us the power to choose our actions wisely and take control of our lives.

In this module of Discovering Buddhism, we investigate the nature of karma, the essential facts about cause and effect, and exactly how we create both our problems and happiness. No matter who we are, or what situation we find ourselves in, we all have the ability to be happy and fulfilled. We need only cultivate the positive habits that lead to happiness. In this weekend workshop, Miffi Maxmillion introduces us to the key principles of Buddhist psychology which provides an amazing set of practical strategies that show us exactly how happiness and mental health are achievable for everyone.

The course includes teachings, short guided reflections, selected readings, worksheets for home and time for questions. We will learn how to cultivate positive ways to communicate with and treat others, and how to develop the constructive states of mind that support happiness. We also focus on practical techniques to break negative habit patterns and stop destructive behaviour.

This is a very popular program that can become a life-changing experience. The techniques are not just for Buddhists. They are universal and can be easily adapted to any tradition. All welcome!

The Buddha taught that the mind is the creator of all our unhappiness and suffering, but it is also the source of all happiness, joy and freedom. By understanding how our minds work, we can become skilled at releasing ourselves from the instinctual habits that keep us from lasting peace. We can achieve this using meditation - a tool for integrating our understanding of the teachings and becoming familiar with positive mental states (see the teaching by Geshe Jamyang the front page of the Winter newsletter).

In this weekend retreat, T.Y. Alexander will lead us through focused analytical meditations on the inner workings of the mind, following the outlines contained in The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (lam-rim). It is an excellent opportunity to spend some quiet time strengthening your practice, and learning to apply the Buddha’s teachings to enhance the quality of your daily life. Anyone is welcome to attend, but some previous knowledge of lam-rim would be beneficial.

Friday 26th July 6:30pm - Sunday 28th July 4:30pm. Facility fee $99. 10% discount for members and concession card holders. Accommodation and meals available separately. Bookings essential!

T.Y. Alexander met her teachers Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche in 1971, studied in Nepal and India, ordained as a Buddhist nun and remained ordained for nine years. TY has since lived and worked in various Buddhist centres around the world. In 1985 she moved to Australia, where she teaches, lead retreats and engages in other work within Buddhist centres.

The qualities of respect, forgiveness, gratitude, and loyalty are powerful tools to strengthen our relationships. Since our own happiness ultimately depends on the happiness of those around us, developing these qualities is one of the most direct and effective routes to a happy life. Our search for meaning depends on an ability and willingness to explore new and unfamiliar territory. It is a challenge to venture deep into oneself and find out how to create a happy and fulfilling life: to have the courage for principles and aspirations.

This workshop provides straightforward tools for developing happiness and meaning in everyday life by focusing on how we relate to others. We learn the deeper value of kindness, honesty, generosity and right speech. Suitable for people of all ages, faiths, and cultural backgrounds; using everyday language for people from any or no spiritual tradition.

This is a paired workshop with Tools to Finding Happiness: How We Think and Act in June. You don't have to do both; you will get a lot out of the individual workshop - but loads out of doing both!

Saturday 3rd August 9am - Sunday 4th 4:30pm. Facility fee $99. 10% discount for FPMT members and concession card holders. Accommodation & meals available separately. Bookings essential!

Dwelling deep within our own hearts, and within the hearts of all beings without exception, is an inexhaustible source of love and wisdom - Lama Yeshe

Compassion, the wish that everyone be free of suffering, lies at the heart of the Buddhist path. This retreat focuses on developing compassion through the practice of reciting the mantra OM MANI PADME HUM - the mantra of Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion. It is easy to recite and easy to remember, but its meaning is extremely profound and the benefits of reciting it are immeasurable. Recitation of this mantra purifies our negative karma, develops our compassionate heart. Ultimately, it creates the causes for us to actualise the entire path to enlightenment.

Join us for the full 5 days of the retreat, or come for a day, or even a single session. Everyone welcome! You don’t need any previous retreat experience to participate in this life-changing opportunity.

Retreat sessions are dedicated to the long life of the Dalai Lama, and to the peace, happiness and freedom of all sentient beings.

Sponsorships are available (covering accommodation and facility fees) for anyone attending the full retreat. Call or email Reception for more details.

"Whatever joy there is in this world all comes from desiring others to be happy” - Shantideva

Bodhicitta is the desire to attain enlightenment in order to benefit all beings. Without it, enlightenment is impossible, because Bodhicitta frees us from the habitual self concern that prevents us from experiencing true happiness and lasting peace.

But most of us have trouble just developing kindness and compassion for those that we know, so how do we give rise to the vast aspiration of Bodhicitta? In this sponsored weekend course, Geshe Jamyang provides detailed practical instructions for how to develop real concern for others, and begin to take personal responsibility for their well-being and happiness.

This course is a great way to follow up on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teaching “In Praise of Bodhicitta” to be given in Sydney in June. Don’t miss out!

Maybe you lack confidence, are coping with loss, work in a high-stress job, are preparing for a big challenge in your life, or just want to be happier, healthier, and more fulfilled – in the space of just 2 days, you will learn scientifically-proven techniques to:

    • reduce stress and worry
    • rise above fear, doubt and insecurity and build genuine confidence
    • handle painful thoughts and feelings far more effectively
    • break self-defeating habits and develop self-acceptance and self-compassion
    • develop a ‘resilient mindset’
    • improve performance and find fulfilment in your work
    • build deeper, more satisfying relationships

Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) is a mindfulness-based approach in psychology that enables us to get our lives moving in rich, full and meaningful ways.  A key component of ACT is ‘mindfulness’: a transformative mental state of awareness, openness and focus. In a state of mindfulness, you can let difficult thoughts and feelings freely flow through you, without getting caught up in them or pushed around by them, and without getting into a struggle with them.

Mindfulness also enables you to engage fully in what you are doing, to maximise your pleasure and fulfilment, or enable peak performance.

During this retreat we can purify our negative karma by engaging in the practices of Vajrasattva, the Buddha of Purification. The objective in purifying negativities is ultimately to decrease our mental and physical suffering, and therefore, to expand our good qualities and become happier.  Learn to make this practice the quickest, most effective way to transform your mind.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains: No matter how thick the dust on a mirror is, the mirror can always be cleaned. Like this, no matter how strong our delusions and how heavy the negative karma we have created, since our mind is not one with them, there is always hope; there is always the potential for our mind to be separated from these obscurations and become completely pure. You can be free from fear, guilt, and all other undesirable emotions. Your mind can become completely free from all faults and perfected in all realizations; your mind can become a fully enlightened mind, a Buddha’s mind.

This retreat is suitable for beginners and long-time practitioners alike. This retreat is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. There are no special prerequisites to attend, though a basic understanding of karma is helpful. Some may find the retreat challenging, but the setting is gentle.

Kopan Downunder is an annual tradition at Chenrezig Institute. It is a twelve-day lam-rim retreat that combines teachings, discussions, and meditation. Students receive instructions on how to make every day meaningful through mind transformation in the path to enlightenment.

This is an ideal retreat for beginners as well as experienced practitioners because it is a review of all Buddha’s teachings that lead to attaining enlightenment.

We recommend for beginning students to read His Holiness the Dalai Lama's From Here to Enlightenment  before, during, or after the retreat.

Beginners should arrive on the first day and are encouraged to complete the full retreat to gain an excellent grounding in the gradual path to enlightenment – the lam rim.

Lam-rim is a genre of Tibetan Buddhist teachings which present the complete path to enlightenment, as taught by the Buddha. In Tibetan Buddhist history there have been many different extensions of the lam-rim. However, all of the teachings of the lam-rim are based on Atisha's 11th Century root text A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment.  Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) made a famous commentary on Atisha’s text, called Lam rim chen mo. Then, Pabongka Rinpoche (1878-1941) made another famous commentary on Tsongkhapa’s text called Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand.

Geshe-la was born in Tibet in 1966 and took ordination at the age of 16.
